Chapter 9
I lowered my eyes slightly and quickly walked away…
Maybe I was overthinking it, but I always felt that Mila was acting too strangely. Initially, I thought she would clash with the family like cats and dogs, but I never expected her to endure the torment. It was so unlike her…
I had planned to stay at home for a few days, set up a situation to sever ties with them. But seeing Mila’s unusual behavior just now, a red flag went up in my mind, reminding me that I should leave immediately.
Thinking about it, I let out a sigh of relief. It was fine, even if the plan had to be adjusted this time. Once I returned, I would apply to work with my mentor on an archaeological excavation project. They wouldn’t be able to contact me for a
while.
After returning, I explained the situation to my mentor and applied to go to a remote mountainous area where a batch of artifacts had just been unearthed, requiring some professionals to assist with the work. The signal in the mountains was poor, and communication with the outside world required going to nearby villages.
So, by the time I received news from home, it was already a month later…
And it wasn’t even my family looking for me; it was the police.
When the police told me everything, I was completely stunned. I never imagined Mila could be so ruthless.
It turned out that a few days after I left home, Mila put a large amount of sleeping pills in the family’s food. She then tied up my brother and my mother, gagging them tightly….
In front of my mother, she began to skin Rhett alive, the first cut aimed at making sure he could never have children. Rhett was trembling with fear, frantically shaking his head, even wetting his pants, but Mila’s hand was steady and relentless
with each cut…
She laughed hysterically, “If you can’t have children, what’s the point of living?”
“I may be useless, but you! Why should you be able to find someone else? Isn’t my child’s death your fault too?! Didn’t you all think he was a dragon child?!”
Then she looked at my mother and said, “Isn’t that right, Mom~! Rhett is useless now… He can’t have children… So why should he take up space and live? Mom, I helped you deal with him! Am I not a good daughter–in–law?!”
My mother shook her head frantically, trying to plead and scream, but no sound came out. She had to watch as Rhett was
skinned alive, one cut at a time.
When my mother woke up, she was so terrified she almost fainted again. Rhett no longer looked human, his body resembling something ravaged by wild beasts, not even leaving a whole corpse…
At that moment, Mila had dressed up and walked out of the house. “Mom, you didn’t leave any descendants for the Barnes
family. Shouldn’t you also be dead? Look, your son is gone, and your grandson was killed by you. Aren’t you a sinner?! Why
are you still alive, taking up space? You should go confess to our ancestors, shouldn’t you?”
With that, Mila, under my mother’s horrified and broken gaze, gave her a fatal stab…
The police officer swallowed hard as he recounted the story. It had been many years since such a heinous crime had
occurred…
After doing all this, Mila calmly sat at home, turned on the TV, and watched it nonchalantly. It was the neighbors who noticed the stench coming from the house, a stench like a rotting corpse left out in the summer heat for weeks. They

realized they hadn’t seen the noisy, troublesome neighbors for a while and called the police… The first batch of officers who entered the house immediately vomited…
Mila had swallowed pesticide and died on the sofa, with the TV still playing “A Happy Family“….
After the police finished speaking, they cautiously comforted me, “I’m sorry for your loss, Miss Barnes.”
I wrapped my arms around myself tightly, unsure of what I was feeling–was it the satisfaction of revenge or sheer terror… Mila must have planned this long ago. If I hadn’t left, who knows what my fate would have been.
When I walked out of the police station, the sky had already darkened…
In my past life, I followed the principles I was taught from a young age: respect your elders, be kind to others. But it led to
a tragic fate.
In this life, I saw through those deceitful people. One can be kind, but not blindly so. Being kind to the wicked is being
cruel to yourself.
But whenever I thought of Mila, my feelings were always mixed…
I felt sympathy and pity for her. I even thought that mare if she hadn’t grown up in such a family and environment, her
fate might have been different.
Every time I thought this, I couldn’t help but loathe my own hypocrisy….
After all, my tragic death in my past life was directly related to her.
Forget it, the past is no longer important. Let bygones be bygones…
“Miss Barnes! We found something new over here! Could you come take a look?”
“Coming!”
I lifted the tent flap and walked out, watching everyone eagerly searching for historical traces. I grabbed my tools and
quickly walked over…
History is buried in the ground, but the future is in our hands.
