Chapter 5
The surgery lasted for several hours. Finally, the obstetrician walked out, looking exhausted and troubled. My mother and brother rushed over immediately.
“Is it a boy? Is it a boy?” they asked anxiously.
The obstetrician frowned deeply. “A boy? Are you still thinking about whether it’s a boy or a girl? I’ve already told you the baby is gone. What were you thinking?”
He shook his head in disbelief. “I can’t believe this. Do you have any common sense? The mother was reckless, and so were you! The baby has been dead for months! The amniotic fluid was foul–smelling! The baby was so decomposed it was unrecognizable!”
“In all my years of practice, I’ve never seen anything so cruel!”
“The mother’s uterus couldn’t be saved either. It’s a miracle we managed to save her life! Did she eat something strange? The baby even had parasites…”
At this point, the experienced obstetrician looked like he was about to gag. He quickly waved his hand dismissively.
“Take the baby with you later. Be prepared for what you’ll see.”
With that, he returned to the operating room. My mother and brother were completely stunned by the news.
My brother muttered to himself, his eyes vacant. “What was that quack saying… dead… unrecognizable…”
My mother collapsed to the ground, wailing. “Oh God! What did our family do to deserve this? My dear grandson, my dear grandson.”
My brother snapped out of his daze and started banging on the operating room door, screaming hysterically. “Murderers! You owe me my child! Give me back my child!”
After the surgery, my sister–in–law was moved to the inpatient ward. My mother and brother didn’t even glance at her. The doctor frowned and said, “Take the baby with you.”
Seeing the swollen, unrecognizable infant, my mother and brother turned away in horror, stepping back repeatedly.
“No way, this isn’t our baby!”
“This is a monster, it’s disgusting!”
A young nurse, unable to bear it any longer, snapped, “Can you get a grip? Didn’t you hear anything the doctor said earlier?!”
“Take the baby and give it a proper burial! This poor child, if you had just been more careful and gone for regular check- ups, it wouldn’t have come to this!”
“And what about the mother? Take good care of her.”

Hearing this, my mother quickly asked, “So, without a uterus, can she still get pregnant…?”
“Of course not! Why are you even thinking about pregnancy now? It’s a miracle she’s even alive.”
At this, both of them collapsed to the ground, utterly devastated, and fainted on the spot.
