Chapter 3
In order to stop Alaric and to repay the favor I owed Alexander, I spent the entire night poring over magical tomes,
searching for a way to break his curse. But the night yielded nothing. Just as I was about to sleep, a loud crash at the
door startled me awake.
A woman barged in and dragged me outside.
“Everyone, come look! It’s this wretched woman! She took my money and persuaded me to marry a gambler. Now he’s lost
all our savings and is forcing me to sell my body to repay the debt. When I refused, he beat me!”
The onlookers erupted in righteous fury, pointing fingers at me.
“What a sin! A perfectly good girl, ruined by her!”
“I always said people like her only care about money. Golden Thread? More like golden trash!”
“No use talking to her–beat her! Let’s get justice for this poor girl!”
Before I could speak, someone grabbed my hair and slammed me to the ground. Fists and feet rained down on me from
all sides.
From the moment she entered, I had recognized her. She had once come to me, asking to be matched with the man she
loved.
But I had seen at a glance that he was no good. I had warned her repeatedly, but she insisted on marrying him anyway.
Now, this farce was clearly someone else’s scheme.
And sure enough, I spotted two familiar faces in the crowd–Alaric and Lyanna, watching with smug satisfaction.
Fury surged in my heart as I roared, “Alaric! What is it you want from me?”
Alaric toyed with Lyanna’s fingers and glanced coldly at me.
“Elira, your sins are too many to count. Today, I’ll be the one to carry out justice–spare the world from your wickedness.”
Lyanna looked at me disapprovingly. “Miss. Vethorne, marriage is no trifling matter. You’ve ruined this young woman’s life. Don’t you feel the slightest remorse?”
My voice shook with anger. “I didn’t! She insisted on marrying him–I tried to stop her!”
An old woman spat in my face. “Can’t even admit what you’ve done? Let me teach you some manners–for your poor parents‘ sake, wherever they are!”
She yanked my hair and slapped me across the face, blow after blow, until stars danced in my vision. I couldn’t even
speak.
Lyanna knelt in front of me, smirking.
“Miss. Vethorne, if you just admit your guilt and swear never to deceive anyone again, I’ll beg His Highness to spare you.”

I struggled to sit up, wanting to say I had done nothing wrong. But before I could utter a word, Lyanna suddenly dropped to the ground, clutching her stomach with a pained expression.
Alaric’s face darkened. He rushed over and kicked me hard in the ribs. “Elira! How dare you push her!”
Pain shot through me, turning my vision white. “I didn’t… she…”
He didn’t listen.
Holding Lyanna protectively in his arms, Alaric glared at me with pure hatred.
“I only meant to teach you a lesson, but it seems you’re beyond redemption. You tried to harm my child!”
“Guards! Throw her into the dungeon. I’ll settle all our old scores with her–every last one.”
