“What makes you think I still love you?
“What right do you have to think that?”
With every step I took forward, Henry instinctively stepped back until he hit the soft couch and sank into it helplessly.
He had not seen me this determined in a long time.
Ever since that night.
For a moment, his mind drifted back to the first time we met.
During my interview, he looked at my resume and frowned.
“Serena, your background isn’t particularly impressive, and you have no experience in this industry.
“What made you apply to our company?
“What makes you think we’d hire you?”
I answered, “It’s because I’m willing to learn. I work hard, and I don’t fear challenges.
“If you give me a chance, I promise you’ll be impressed.”
Seven years later, I kept my promise.
The confident, determined girl who had walked into his office back then had weathered seven long years of storms and stood
before him once again.
She was stronger than ever.
However, this time, there was nothing he could do to keep her.
His fingers curled into a fist, his nails digging into his palm. It sent a dull ache straight to his chest.
As I stared at the speechless man, a flicker of disdain and sarcasm flashed across my eyes.
The disdain was for Henry.
The sarcasm was for myself.
For wasting seven years of my life on this man.
Seven years. How many seven years does one get in a lifetime?
I had thrown them all away.
Lost in thought, I was caught off guard when Henry suddenly spoke.

“What about our son?
“What?”
I blinked my eyes, unable to process his words for a second.
He lifted his head. His eyes were now filled with something dark and unhinged.
“If you insist on divorcing me, I won’t give you custody.
“You’ll never see him again. Are you ready for that?”
“How dare you!”
Rage boiled inside me as I glared at him, seeing him for what he truly was. He was an absolute monster.
Henry smirked like he had just uncovered my greatest weakness.
“If you come back with me, I promise I’ll treat you and our son well. We can have a happy family.
“Serena, can you really bear to let him grow up without a mother?”
He was looking at me with undisguised satisfaction, thinking he had me cornered.
This time, it was my turn to panic.
Before I could speak, a small, furious voice rang out from upstairs.
“Never!”
My son came rushing down. His little face flushed with anger, and his voice hoarse from shouting.
“I only have one parent, and that’s my mom!
“You are not my dad!”
“I don’t have a dad like you!”

He pointed straight at Henry. His tiny fists were clenched, and his features that were so much like his father’s twisted in both
rage and fear.
He was afraid that he would never see me again.
He was also afraid that I would give in, for his sake, and return to that hell of a home.
Henry’s expression darkened. His voice was cold and dismissive.
“You don’t get a say in this.”
My son wiped away his tears. Then, it was as though he was making the hardest decision of his life.

Chapter 1
“Mommy, don’t worry about me. Just divorce him.”
His small hand grasped mine, shaking, but he still forced himself to speak.
“Mommy, I’ll be okay. You don’t have to worry about me.
“When…”
He sniffled, swallowing his sobs.
“When I grow up, I’ll come and find you.”
At that moment, I felt like my heart had been ripped straight out of my chest.
If my child had been cruel to me, perhaps I could have let go without hesitation. However, Lyle was not.
From the moment he was born, we had always had each other’s backs. He was not just my child. He was my entire family.
I would do anything for my family.
A realization settled in my heart, clear and unwavering at this thought.
“Okay, I promise you.”
My son immediately turned around. Tears streamed down his little face as he begged me not to come back.
