Aurora
I sat quietly on the couch, staring into space while Kaiden and Ariel talked in his room. Their voices were muffled, and I didn’t try to listen, not like I could because the doors were soundproof. Ryker was beside me, his calm presence comforting. I knew he’d seen everything that happened, and I could tell he was being careful, which I appreciated. I didn’t know much about relationships, but it was obvious she was Kaiden’s girlfriend. The way she called him “baby” made that clear, Guilt and disgust filled me as I thought about how I’d let him touch me, not knowing he was already with someone.
“Rory!” Ryker’s voice snapped me out of my thoughts. I looked at him, seeing his raised eyebrow and curious expression. “What’s on your mind? I’ve been calling you, but you didn’t hear me,” he said gently.
I didn’t know how to explain it. So much had happened–Kaiden had kissed me, and it stirred emotions I didn’t understand. I was still trying to process it all.
“You’re zoning out again, Rory,” Ryker said with a small laugh as he patted my hair, playing, with a strand. I tried to respond to him but no words came out.
“Don’t push yourself too hard. You’ll speak when you’re ready,” he added, resting his hand over mine.
It was frustrating. I had spoken carlier, even if just a little, but now I couldn’t make any words come out. All that came were strange, meaningless sounds.
“Did Kaiden upset you?” Ryker asked, his voice serious. Just hearing Kaiden’s name made anger flare up inside me, and I shook my head quickly.
“Did you miss me?” Ryker asked, smiling softly now. I nodded, and his smile grew warmer. “I missed you too, Rory,” he said, ruffling my hair like a protective older brother. For the first time in that night, I managed a small smile back. Ryker felt like the brother Evans could never be.
The sound of the door opening caught my attention. Kaiden and Ariel came out together, her arm wrapped tightly around his. She looked so happy, and my stomach churned as I watched her kiss him. Their kiss was passionate and confident, so different from the awkward one Kaiden had shared with me earlier. My chest tightened. What had I expected? I was nothing more than an outsider in their relationship.
Ariel smirked as she pulled away from Kaiden and walked over to the couch. She sat down beside me, her presence radiating confidence, while Ryker stood up. My heart raced as I tried to control the mix of emotions swirling inside–guilt, anger, and confusion. Part of me wanted to apologize, even though I hadn’t initiated the kiss, it didn’t ease the guilt. But no words
came.
“Hi, dear. I don’t think we’ve met. I’m Ariel, Kaiden’s girlfriend,” she said, holding out her hand to me. Her smile looked friendly, but her eyes told a different story. She was clearly marking her territory.
I reached out to shake her hand, but she pulled it back suddenly, a smirk spreading across her face. Her expression changed, and her eyes looked cold and mean.
“Oh, that’s right. You can’t talk,” she said in a mocking voice. Her words cut through me, making me feel small. I hadn’t felt this way since I got here. I clenched my fists, wanting to prove her wrong, but I couldn’t. I was mute. The few words I had managed earlier had only probably come out due to strong emotions I felt.
Kaiden stood by the door, saying nothing. His face gave nothing away, and he seemed as calm and distant as ever.
“Ryker!” Kaiden called sharply, breaking the tension. Without looking at me, he stepped into the room, Ryker following him. Ryker entered the room, closing the door behind him and leaving me alone with Ariel.
“Did you really think Kaiden would like someone as weak as you?” Ariel spat, looking at me like I was dirt beneath her feet. Her words reminded me of how my father used to talk to me. I understood why she was angry–finding her boyfriend kissing another girl couldn’t have been easy. But her words still hurt.

Chapter 8
“Are you that dumb, or are you just clueless?” Ariel sneered, “Did you actually believe he’d choose someone like you when he has me? Whatever happened between you two didn’t mean anything. It was just a moment.”
Her words stung, each one sharper than the last. Before I could react, she grabbed my chin roughly, forcing me to look at
her.
“Do you understand what I’m saying? Or are you stupid, too?” she snapped.
I nodded quickly, my head shaking slightly in her grip.
“Good,” she said, smirking as she let go of me. Her nails dug into my skin just enough to leave a sting. For the first time, I felt something burning inside me. I didn’t just want to be strong–I needed to be. I was tired of being weak, tired of being stepped on. I wanted to be the one others feared to cross.
The door creaked open, and both Kaiden and Ryker came back into the room. Ariel’s face lit up as she rushed to Kaiden, wrapping her arms tightly around his waist.
“Are we leaving now?” she asked sweetly, looking up at him.
Kaiden glanced at me briefly before turning his attention back to Ariel. “Yeah,” he said in a calm voice. Without saying another word, he left with Ariel, acting like nothing had ever happened between us–which didn’t because it was probably just a kiss to him.
I stared at the closed door, a bitter feeling growing in my chest. I felt stupid, weak, and discarded.
“Well, I guess it’s just me and you now, Rory,” Ryker said lightly as he moved into the kitchen. “Should I make you something to eat, or did you already eat?”
His words barely reached me. My mind was clouded with frustration and determination. I wanted to be strong. I would do whatever it took to make that happen.
I wanted to speak again. If I’d done it once, I could do it again.
