Chapter 5
Celeste POV:
Elizabeth looked at Dominic in confusion. Clearly, she hadn’t heard anything about Dominic being married.
“Alpha Kingsford, I’ve been away from BlueOcean Pack for years, so I’m not quite caught up. You and my daughter–are you two somehow connected?”
Dominic’s expression was icy as he replied emotionlessly, “If there ever was a connection, it’s in the past. I’m currently in the process of severing our MATE bond.”
I hadn’t anticipated that the genuine feelings I had treasured for years his lips.

Was I angry? Of course. But beyond anger, I felt a chilling realization–I had chosen a cold–hearted monster to
cherish.
Without thinking, I pulled out the ring box from my bag and threw it hard at Dominic. “To hell with you, you scumbag! The greatest regret of my life is ever being associated with you. Tomorrow at nine o’clock, I’ll be waiting at the Werewolf Civil Hall. Anyone who doesn’t show up is a coward!”
The ring box struck his forehead sharply, leaving a red mark, and the ring scattered onto the floor by his feet. This time, I didn’t spare it a single glance. I simply stepped on it as I stormed out, slamming the door behind me.
These past few years, my life had been riddled with hardships. This confrontation felt like the final straw, the last crushing weight I could bear. I hadn’t gone far before my body gave out, and I collapsed by the roadside.
As consciousness faded, I stared numbly at the gray sky. Fine raindrops splashed against my face, and sharp stones beneath me pierced painfully into my body.
At that moment, I thought: since the entire world seemed hostile to me, perhaps dying like this wouldn’t be so bad.
1 this cruel, calculating world, there wasn’t much left for me to hold onto.
When I awoke again, I was lying in an unfamiliar room. Warm yellow light drove away the darkness, and the room’s gentle heating made it feel like spring.
“You’re awake.”
I turned my head slightly and saw Julian’s gentle face. “Julian, did you save me?”
“I saw you collapsed by the roadside when I was returning from work, so I brought you home. Your clothes were soaked through, so I had my maid help you change into dry ones.”

His clear, gentle eyes showed no trace of inappropriate intent, only sincere concern.
“Thank you, Julian.”
“I’ve made chicken soup; it’ll be ready soon. Drink some warm water first, and rest a little.”
I lifted the blanket, intending to get out of bed. “You don’t have to go through so much trouble. It’s late; I’ll leave shortly.”
But my body was too weak, and the moment my feet touched the ground, I lost balance and nearly collapsed. Julian swiftly stepped forward to steady me. A faint, clean scent from his clothing surrounded me.
He used the same laundry detergent my family once used–the same scent Dominic had worn.
Just the thought of Dominic brought a sharp, stabbing pain to my chest.
“You’re extremely weak right now,” Julian gently advised. “If you want to live a bit longer, don’t push yourself. Think of your father.”
With a trace of hope in my eyes, I finally whispered, “In that case, please help me.”
I quietly watched the tall figure busying himself in the kitchen. Honestly, I hadn’t interacted much with Julian in the past. Our most notable interaction had been when I received an award as an outstanding freshman student from him at medical school.
From the first day I enrolled, I knew Julian was considered a campus star. His charming looks and gentle personality, combined with his brilliance, made him immensely popular at school. Due to his early internship at one of the pack’s most prestigious hospitals, our paths had rarely crossed.

I lowered my eyes and responded quietly, “Julian, I’ve studied medicine. I understand both the benefits and side effects of chemotherapy.”
He patiently persisted, “Chemotherapy followed by surgery has a strong chance of curing your condition. The effects may be harsh, but if you endure-”
I slowly lifted my gaze, my eyes brimming with unshed tears. My voice trembled as I fought to keep my emotions under control. “But Julian, I can’t endure anymore.”

His comforting words caught in his throat Meeting my tear filled eyes, he was silent for a moment before sotdy asking, “Think carefully. Isn’t there anyone or anything left in this world you care abour?
After a brief hesitation, I replied, “Only my father.”
“Then stay alive for your father’s sake,” Julian urged gently.
I smiled bitterly. “Thank you, Julian. I feel much better now. I’ve troubled you enough.
Julian’s gaze lingered briefly on my empty finger where my wedding ring had once been. However, he didn’t ask further questions.
“Where are you heading? I’ll drive you.”
“No need.” I politely declined. “I’ve already called a taxi; it’ll be here soon.”
Though he was reluctant, Julian didn’t press further. He patiently waited by my side until the taxi arrived and saw me off. What I didn’t know was that after I left, he hesitated for a moment, then decided to quietly follow me.
When the taxi dropped me off by the riverside as I’d requested, I stared blankly at the flowing water, my mind tangled in messy thoughts. The rain had stopped, leaving behind a chill that seeped into my bones.
Just then, tires screeched to a halt behind me. A familiar black luxury car stopped nearby.
The door opened, and Dominic, the powerful figure often appearing on magazine covers, emerged beneath the streetlights.
The wind whipped through my messy hair, leaving me looking even more pitiful. Dominic raised his hand as if to brush my tangled strands back, but after a moment’s hesitation, he withdrew his touch.
“You have something to ask?” he said coldly.
I stared directly at him, forcing out my first question: “Was the Parker family’s bankruptcy your doing?”
“Yes,” he answered without emotion.
Then, summoning all my strength, I asked my second question: “Is Marina’s child yours?”
I desperately wanted him to deny it, hoping it was all just my paranoia, but Dominic didn’t hesitate.
He replied coolly, “Yes.”
Fury overwhelmed me. I stepped forward quickly and slapped him across the face. “Dominic, you’re heartless!
He effortlessly captured my wrist, then his thumb brushed away my falling tears as he asked quietly, “Did it hurt?”
“You monster! Why did you do this to me? What exactly did my family ever do to you?”
